Assaults on Transport Infrastructure in Kherson Region

According to Главком: Authorities installed by Russia in the Kherson region have reported strikes on transport links connecting Crimea to southern Ukraine. According to their claims, Russian air defense systems and mobile fire teams allegedly intercepted 25 attack drones. The targets included crossings along the Chongar route as well as other key transport facilities. Traffic toward the Dzhankoy checkpoint was temporarily halted.

Impact on Key Transport Routes

During the night attacks, a bridge between Henichesk and the Arabat Spit was hit. After the strike, traffic on that crossing resumed in a single-lane, reversible pattern. Additional damage was inflicted on a bridge along the Henichesk–Strilkove road and another in Chongar, with fuel tankers also coming under fire. Ukraine’s military command has not officially commented on these reports.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) assesses that these strikes aim to disrupt logistics routes between Crimea and the Kherson region. The first attack on the Chongar Bridge occurred on June 7, followed by a second on June 9. After this series of strikes, the bridge was completely destroyed. The occupation authorities have advised using alternative routes via Armyansk and Perekop.

The situation surrounding transport infrastructure in the Kherson region and between Crimea and mainland Ukraine reflects an escalation in the conflict and underscores the strategic importance of controlling logistics corridors. Damage to critical bridges and transport arteries could significantly hinder the supply of resources and the movement of military forces, which in turn would affect the overall security environment in the area. As the war continues, these attacks may be part of a broader strategy aimed at weakening the opponent and reducing its combat effectiveness.

The recent strikes on transport links have not only impacted traffic to Crimea but also highlight the ongoing volatility in the region. For a deeper understanding of how the attack on the Chongar Bridge has affected access to the Arabat Spit, you can read more in our detailed report on the situation here.
