Hungarian Election Results: Liliána Grexa Re-elected

According to Главком: Following Hungary's recent parliamentary elections, Liliána Grexa has been re-elected to represent the Ukrainian national minority. She first won this parliamentary seat in 2022. In a statement, Grexa noted that during the campaign, she faced pressure from both members of the Ukrainian minority's own parliamentary body and from political parties. Despite this, the level of support for the Ukrainian national minority's electoral list remained consistent with the 2022 result. This election took place amid a significant political shift in Hungary, where a new opposition leader has emerged victorious.

Liliána Grexa: 'Over recent months, a considerable number of individuals who were deputies of the Ukrainian national minority deregistered from the Ukrainian nationality list for party-political or other motives, and they called on voters of Ukrainian nationality to do the same.'

She added that 'even under such intense pressure, the Ukrainian national minority list received the same percentage of support as in 2022, when I was first elected as parliamentary representative.'

Election Outcome and Its Implications

With nearly all votes counted, Péter Magyar's party secured 138 seats in Hungary's 199-seat parliament. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán conceded defeat in the election to opposition leader Péter Magyar. Grexa expressed her gratitude, stating: 'I sincerely thank everyone who today, with their vote, supported not only their chosen candidate in the single-member constituency from the party and through them the party itself, but also the list of the Ukrainian national minority, as well as me personally as a candidate for the position of parliamentary representative of the Ukrainian nationality in Hungary.'

The election results, particularly Grexa's re-election, indicate the continued political representation of the Ukrainian national minority despite the pressures and challenges it faced. This outcome is significant for the future development of relations between the Ukrainian community and the Hungarian government, as well as for shaping national minority policy in the country. Events and changes in Hungary's political landscape can influence regional stability and interstate cooperation in the face of contemporary challenges.

As Liliána Grexa continues her role as a representative for the Ukrainian minority in Hungary, the recent election results are poised to influence the country's foreign policy, particularly regarding its stance on Ukraine and sanctions against Russia. Understanding these implications is crucial, especially in light of the shifting political landscape.
