Kyiv Signals Readiness for Constructive Talks with Tbilisi Following Leaders’ Meeting
Ukraine and Georgia: A Path Toward Renewed Dialogue
According to Главком: Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has announced that Kyiv is prepared to engage in meaningful discussions with Georgia after the two nations’ leaders met in Yerevan. The encounter took place during the European Political Community summit, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. Sybiha described the meeting as 'historic' and stressed that Ukraine aims to steer bilateral relations back toward 'proper diplomatic channels.'
Sensitive Issues Linger Between Kyiv and Tbilisi
In comments to the Georgian media outlet Euroscope, Sybiha acknowledged that 'some sensitive issues' remain between the two capitals. He also revealed plans to meet with Georgia’s foreign minister in Chișinău during a session of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers. The minister expressed optimism that Ukraine is ready to move forward, despite the presence of 'unresolved matters' between the countries.
Earlier, Kyiv accused the Georgian authorities of facilitating the circumvention of sanctions against Russia, a key factor behind the strained ties. Sybiha remarked that
“our people, our societies deserve this”
-referring to a constructive dialogue. In 2025, President Zelenskyy imposed sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili, honorary chairman of the Georgian Dream party, along with other officials, including Irakli Kobakhidze. Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who holds Ukrainian citizenship, remains in detention, further complicating relations between the two countries.
The history of tension between Ukraine and Georgia continues, especially following widespread protests in Georgia in 2025 that erupted after the parliamentary elections. The Georgian government also announced a postponement of European Union accession talks until 2028. Against this backdrop, Sybiha underscored the need to sustain dialogue, emphasizing the importance of resolving existing challenges between the states.
Dialogue between Ukraine and Georgia matters not only for both nations but also for regional stability. Given the complex political landscape and a history of strained relations, a push for constructive cooperation could mark a vital step in rebuilding trust. Successful negotiations might unlock new avenues for collaboration in areas like the economy and security, bringing positive outcomes for both societies.
As Ukraine seeks to mend its relationship with Georgia, it is crucial to address the unresolved matters discussed during the recent meeting between the two leaders. These lingering issues not only influence diplomatic efforts but also impact regional stability and cooperation.
