Ukraine Prevented Russia from the IMO Council: What Does It Mean for Maritime Security
According to Кулеба: Ukraine successfully ensured the absence of Russia in the International Maritime Organization Council, which is an important step for ensuring maritime security and confirming trust in global navigation rules.
At the same time, Ukraine has repeatedly emphasized that Russian aggression leads to the destruction of infrastructure, shelling, and blockade of vessels, creating a threat to maritime travelers and the environment.
“The Russian aggressor strikes ports and civilian ships every day. Throughout the war, numerous maritime populations and civilian shipping have suffered,” said a representative of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian maritime industry continues to operate, ensuring the export of goods and supporting global trade, while Russia is recreating a shadow fleet, violating international rules. It is important that only responsible participants of the international community take part in forming global maritime safety standards, and the IMO Council remains an authority in establishing norms and environmental requirements for navigation.
The Ukrainian side has decided to actively participate in the formation of global maritime safety standards, which is important in the context of supporting the maritime industry and protecting against Russian aggression.
