Prisoner Swap Details

According to Главком: In a recent prisoner exchange, Ukraine transferred an Armenian citizen known as Hamlet to Russian custody. This transfer occurred alongside the release of a large group of Ukrainians who had been held in Russian captivity for a prolonged period. Hamlet, who had joined the war from a Russian pre-trial detention center, had been convicted under Article 228 for drug possession and trafficking and was facing what would have been his fifth prison term.

Hamlet signed a military contract aiming to start a new career. That career lasted only three months, during which he sustained shrapnel wounds from a Ukrainian drone attack and subsequently surrendered. He stated:

“I signed the contract quickly. I was just tired of sitting; this was supposed to be my fifth time – the mercenary Hamlet.”

Prisoners Released in the Exchange

As part of the swap, military and civilian personnel were freed from Russian captivity, including members of:

  • The National Guard,
  • The State Border Guard Service,
  • The Armed Forces,
  • Territorial Defense units,
  • Air Assault forces,
  • Motorized Rifle and Mechanized units.

Most of those released had been held since 2022. The group included 28 officers who had also been in captivity since that time. The oldest released service member is 63 years old, while the youngest is 21.

The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed the captivity of 12 more Ukrainians whose fate was previously unknown. Prisoner exchanges are a critical, though complex, component of wartime diplomacy between Ukraine and Russia. Hamlet succinctly summarized his release: “Got lucky – Hamlet.”

Such swaps form a key part of humanitarian policy during the conflict, enabling the return of both military personnel and civilians caught in the war. These efforts reflect attempts by both sides to alleviate the suffering of those caught in dire circumstances. While these exchanges are tactical humanitarian acts, they also represent rare points of operational coordination between the warring parties.

In light of recent developments, the ongoing dynamics of prisoner exchanges in the region highlight the significance of such negotiations. For instance, another recent exchange saw the return of 40 troops from the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, further emphasizing the humanitarian efforts involved.
