Ukraine Backs EU’s Renewal of Sanctions on Iran
Ukraine Aligns with EU Decision to Extend Iran Sanctions
According to Рубрика — Політика: Ukraine has aligned itself with the European Union’s move to prolong sanctions against Iran, following the EU Council’s decision of 24 July 2026. The restrictions stem from Tehran’s backing of Russia in the war against Ukraine and from Iranian activities in the Middle East that threaten maritime navigation, according to the EU. The European External Action Service (EEAS), speaking on behalf of the bloc’s High Representative, Kaja Kallas, announced Ukraine’s alignment and stated:
“The European Union takes note of this commitment and welcomes it.”
The EU originally introduced these Iran-related sanctions in 2023, partly over its support for Russia. The measures also apply to assistance provided to armed groups in the Middle East and the Red Sea area. In November 2024, the EU Council expanded the sanctions for similar reasons. This year, the EU added Tehran’s actions affecting freedom of navigation in the Middle East as another basis for the restrictions.
European States Joining the Decision
Beyond Ukraine, eight other European countries have joined the EU’s decision to renew the sanctions:
- Albania
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Iceland
- Liechtenstein
- Moldova
- Montenegro
- North Macedonia
- Norway
These eight countries are not EU members but coordinate with the bloc on many foreign-policy decisions. The EU Council’s 24 July decision extends the restrictions introduced under Decision 2023/1532 and removes four individuals from the sanctions list.
The renewed Iran sanctions show the international community’s continued resolve in countering aggression and Tehran’s destabilizing actions. They also underline the importance of coordination among the countries backing Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty. With the situation in Ukraine and the wider region evolving, these measures may influence Iran’s future conduct and its ties with other states, especially Russia.
