Sweden and Ukraine Move Closer to a Deal on Gripen Fighter Jets
Kyiv and Stockholm in Talks Over JAS 39 Gripen E Aircraft
According to Главком: Ukraine and Sweden are actively negotiating the purchase of Saab’s JAS 39 Gripen E fighter jets. A potential agreement could be signed in 2025 or 2026, with initial aircraft deliveries expected roughly three years after the contract is finalized. Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated,
'we have a plan for financing this. I think in a few months it will be good news for your country, for our country, and bad news for the Russians.'
These discussions mark a significant step in Ukraine’s efforts to bolster its air capabilities amid ongoing conflict.
Funding and Collaborative Efforts
The financial framework for the deal is being explored, including within the context of an 80 billion Swedish krona aid package for Ukraine. Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson confirmed that
'negotiations are going well' and added, 'we are also in talks with other countries about what contributions they could make. This could involve, for example, personnel training or weapons systems.'
The Gripen E is a modern multirole fighter designed for air, ground, and maritime combat missions. It is equipped with an AESA Raven ES-05 radar and advanced electronic warfare systems, and can deploy Meteor missiles with a range exceeding 100 kilometers. During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s 2023 visit to Sweden, a declaration of intent was signed regarding the potential sale of 100 to 150 Gripen E jets to Ukraine.
Separately, Ukraine has signed a declaration with France to strengthen its aviation and air defense, which could involve contracts for approximately 100 French Rafale fighter jets. These parallel efforts underscore Ukraine’s strategy to rapidly modernize its air force by drawing on international partnerships.
The negotiations for the JAS 39 Gripen E highlight Ukraine’s drive to upgrade its armed forces in response to current security threats. Finalizing a deal for these advanced aircraft could significantly alter the regional power balance. Moreover, collaboration with Sweden and France demonstrates a robust engagement of global allies in supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities, a critical factor amid the ongoing armed conflict.
