Donbas Situation Discussed in Abu Dhabi Negotiations

According to Главком: A new round of talks concerning the situation in Donbas was held in Abu Dhabi on February 4-5, 2023, with representatives from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia in attendance. Over the two days of meetings, the Ukrainian delegation reaffirmed its firm position, stating:

"We stand where we stand"

- a stance described as the most just and reliable model for securing a ceasefire. These talks are part of ongoing international diplomatic efforts to resolve the long-running conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Debate Over a Proposed Free Economic Zone

During the February 4 meeting, discussions also covered the potential creation of a free economic zone. The American side presented its view on the possibility of such a compromise, while the Ukrainian delegation noted that the free zone concept had not gained support from either Ukraine or Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia's goal is for all countries to recognize Donbas as Russian as part of a peace deal, a condition he stated is unacceptable for Ukraine.

Following the trilateral meeting, the negotiation process continued with working group sessions. Complex issues remained unresolved, though it was indicated that a new meeting within the negotiation framework would be held soon. President Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine's position remains unchanged:

"We have said that the most reliable position is 'we stand where we stand'"

.

The outcomes of the Abu Dhabi talks reflect the entrenched complexity of the Donbas situation and the differing approaches to a peaceful settlement among the participants. Despite a lack of progress on key issues, the continuation of dialogue signals a mutual, though cautious, desire to find a compromise. The upcoming meetings could prove critical for future efforts to achieve stability in the region.
