Starlink Direct to Cell in Ukraine: over 540 thousand SMS in three weeks

According to Федоров: Recently, Kyivstar launched the Starlink Direct to Cell service across Ukraine. Within three weeks, over 2 million people have already used the opportunity to connect to satellite communications. They managed to send and receive more than 540 thousand SMS using the 'Kyivstar | SpaceX' signal.

Initially, this technology worked only for Android smartphone users. Now, Starlink Direct to Cell is available for iPhone 13 users and newer models with iOS 26.2 and above in areas without signal coverage.

This innovative technology allows a regular 4G phone to connect directly to the satellite, bypassing terrestrial base stations. This helps Ukrainians stay connected when there is no access to conventional networks: during bad weather, power outages, or network issues. The system operates thanks to 600 Starlink satellites and the Starlink Direct to Cell technology.

Coverage is available throughout Ukraine, except for temporarily occupied territories, border areas, and regions with active hostilities.

The next step - voice calls and mobile internet in 2026

The introduction of voice calls and mobile internet is expected to reach a threshold in 2026. The company is working on expanding the capabilities of the Starlink Direct to Cell service so that every Ukrainian can stay connected in any conditions.

Ukrainians have gained the opportunity to use satellite communications thanks to a new service from Kyivstar - Starlink Direct to Cell. The technology allows sending and receiving SMS directly via satellite signal, even in hard-to-reach areas. In the future, it is planned to expand the service to include voice calls and access to mobile internet.
