NATO Drills in Estonia: A Lesson in Modern Warfare

According to Главком: In May 2025, NATO conducted military exercises in Estonia, which were detailed in a report by The Wall Street Journal. During these war games, Ukrainian soldiers, acting as the opposing force, managed to defeat two Alliance battalions in just half a day. The Ukrainian participants were from the 412th Nemesis and 427th Rarog Brigades, both units belonging to the Unmanned Systems Forces. These drills provided a stark, realistic simulation of the battlefield tactics currently being refined in Eastern Europe.

The Ukrainian troops were tasked with identifying and destroying enemy forces, mining logistical routes, and delivering supplies to friendly units. They utilized the Vector aerial reconnaissance complex to locate their targets. The Ukrainian brigades successfully overwhelmed offensive groups that were unprepared for the massed assault from various unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems.

Tactical Errors and New Rules of Engagement

During the exercises, the Ukrainian personnel identified several key errors that led to the opposing force's defeat. These included:

  • Moving equipment in large, concentrated groups;
  • A lack of proper camouflage;
  • Infantry failing to take cover upon the appearance of drones;
  • Not checking roads for mines.
A soldier from the 412th Nemesis Brigade, with the call sign Nik, noted that the drills demonstrated the realities of modern combat, which dictate new rules that NATO partners are not always prepared to face.

In related news, it was revealed that the United States plans to transfer two NATO command posts to its European allies: one in Naples, Italy, and another in Norfolk, USA. This move signals a deepening of military integration within the Alliance in response to contemporary security challenges.

These exercises underscore the critical need for military strategies to adapt to new combat realities, particularly the growing dominance of drone technology. They also highlight the necessity for NATO members to continuously evaluate and refine their defensive approaches by learning from joint maneuvers. The enhanced military cooperation between the U.S. and its European allies reflects a concerted push toward more effective collective security in the face of modern threats.
