Ukrainian Footballers Gain Non-Foreigner Status in Key European Leagues
New Status for Ukrainian Players in Europe
According to Главком: The Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) has successfully negotiated a significant change in the status of its players in several major European leagues. Based on documents prepared for UEFA that cite the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, Ukrainian athletes will no longer be classified as foreign players in ten championships, including those of Spain and Germany. The UAF's arguments were also accepted by nations such as the Netherlands and France, effectively removing a discriminatory barrier for Ukrainian footballers. This development is a notable diplomatic achievement for Ukrainian sport during a challenging period.
UAF's Financial Commitments and Broader Support
This new status follows similar changes already implemented in other countries, including Greece, Denmark, Poland, Portugal, Croatia, and the Czech Republic. The move is designed to create more opportunities for Ukrainian players in European leagues and to foster the overall development of football within Ukraine.
In related news, the UAF has disclosed its budget for 2025, which totals 19.3 million euros. Key allocations from this sum include:
- 4.1 million euros dedicated to supporting youth and women's national teams, as well as children's and youth football programs.
- 3.8 million euros allocated for the maintenance of the Football House, general organizational operations, and staff salaries.
Serhiy Rebrov remains the head coach of the Ukrainian national team. It is also noted that FIFA's Council has not considered reinstating rights for Russian entities, reaffirming the global football community's stance on the matter.
This shift in status is poised to substantially impact the careers of Ukrainian players and their ability to compete in European leagues. In turn, this will enhance the competitiveness of Ukrainian football. The change also reflects international solidarity and a willingness to collaborate, providing vital opportunities for the development and promotion of Ukrainian sport during a critical time.
