After Six Months in Iranian Custody, Ukrainian Sailors Finally Return Home

Ukrainian sailors returned home
Після піврічного перебування в іранському полоні, українські моряки нарешті повернулися на батьківщину.

Ukrainian Crew Members Come Back from Iran

According to Главком: Four Ukrainian seafarers, detained since April after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps seized a Greek container vessel, have arrived back in Ukraine and reunited with their families. The announcement came from Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The sailors were taken into custody aboard the Greek-operated container ship and had remained in Iranian detention ever since. Through coordinated efforts involving Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Consular Services Department, and the Ukrainian embassy in Greece, the identities of the detained crew members were confirmed. Following the successful completion of repatriation procedures, the men have now left Iranian territory.

Heorhii Tykhyi: 'We are pleased to report that these efforts have yielded a positive outcome. Four of our citizens have already departed Iran. They are now safe with their families. We extend our gratitude to fellow diplomats from partner nations, representatives of the ship-owning company, and everyone who contributed to bringing our sailors back. This reflects an unwavering principle of Ukraine's diplomatic service: Ukraine never abandons its people.'

Why This Matters for Ukrainian Mariners

This case carries significant weight for Ukrainian seafarers, as similar detentions can threaten both safety and stability in maritime shipping. The sailors' return highlights the effectiveness of Ukraine's diplomatic efforts in protecting its citizens abroad.

Furthermore, restoring the free movement of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz could positively impact the broader landscape of international maritime transport, ultimately contributing to stability in global markets.
