Ukraine to Train Demining Specialists Under New International Standards

Workshop Focuses on Localizing Humanitarian Demining Efforts

According to Мін. Економіки: A workshop on localizing humanitarian demining, organized by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining, was held in Kyiv on February 3. The event presented the findings of an assessment of the needs of Ukrainian demining operators. This assessment involved 19 Ukrainian operators, the majority of whom are from commercial organizations. The scale of contamination from landmines and unexploded ordnance in Ukraine is among the largest in the world, making such coordination vital.

At least two specialized training sessions are scheduled for 2024. A grant management training will take place in May, followed by an operational procedures course in June. These new sessions are designed to enhance the effectiveness and safety of Ukrainian demining personnel.

Key Equipment for Humanitarian Demining Operations

The technical tools utilized in humanitarian demining operations include:

• Mechanical demining machines
• Specialized transport vehicles
• Wide-area metal detectors
• Multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)

This equipment is critical for supporting operators working in high-risk environments.

The workshop marks a significant step in advancing Ukraine's demining capabilities. Enhancing operator skills and integrating new technologies can substantially reduce risks to human life and improve safety in conflict-affected regions. The planned training also reflects a sustained commitment by international organizations to support Ukraine in overcoming the consequences of war and delivering humanitarian aid.
