The Story of Kartman

According to Главком: While serving on the Zaporizhzhia front, a Ukrainian infantryman with the call sign Kartman, from the 118th Separate Mechanized Brigade, was forced to take shelter from enemy artillery, mortar, and drone fire. He ended up in a dugout already occupied by a Russian soldier, where he remained for 14 days. During this extended period in the shelter, with no food or water, Kartman was forced to subsist on rainwater and condensation. This front-line episode highlights the extreme conditions soldiers face in the ongoing conflict.

Despite his own dire situation, Kartman managed to persuade the Russian soldier to lay down his arms.

"I used moments when he had fits of anger, when he was upset about the wind preventing them from dropping off food and drink. He couldn't handle going without food at all,"

Kartman noted, describing the tense standoff.

"As for me, I ate almost nothing all those days."

Returning to Friendly Lines

After the Russian soldier agreed to surrender, a Ukrainian drone appeared over their position. Kartman signaled it, which enabled him to finally escape the dugout and return to his unit. His wife, Lesia, provided crucial moral support throughout the ordeal, writing to him:

"I kept writing to him, 'You will get out, I know you are strong.'"

This account is reminiscent of other instances where Ukrainian soldiers, finding themselves in perilous situations, have managed to find a way out. Earlier in the Donetsk region, Ukrainian soldier Volodymyr Pozitiv Aleksandrov was captured but ultimately convinced his occupiers to surrender. Another serviceman, 29-year-old Kyivan Denys Prudnikov (call sign Moldovan), survived a mission in Donetsk after being wounded in the leg and was forced to crawl 6 kilometers back to Ukrainian positions.

Kartman's story underscores the remarkable courage and resilience of Ukrainian troops operating under the most arduous wartime conditions. Such episodes demonstrate a high level of adaptability and resourcefulness, showing that even in dire circumstances, Ukrainian soldiers can find solutions to seemingly impossible situations. These narratives inspire not only the military but also the civilian population, proving that hope and determination can overcome immense hardship.

The resilience shown by Ukrainian soldiers in the face of adversity is not an isolated incident. For instance, after enduring 224 days on the front lines, members of the Alcatraz Battalion also faced significant challenges while defending their positions in Donetsk. Their experiences further illustrate the intense pressure and bravery required in these conflict zones.
