Kyiv Region Zoo Celebrates Birth of a Black Amur Leopard

According to Главком: A Kyiv region zoo has announced a significant event: the birth of a black Amur leopard cub named Hera. Born in August 2025, the cub had to be hand-reared by veterinarians after its mother, Salma, became ill and weakened. Now around six months old, Hera weighs approximately 15 kilograms. The cub is being prepared to move to an open-air enclosure, where visitors will be able to see her starting in April. Amur leopards are among the world's most endangered big cats, making this birth particularly noteworthy for conservation efforts.

Hera belongs to the Far Eastern leopard subspecies, of which only about one hundred individuals remain in the wild. The cub's distinctive black coat is the result of recessive genes, making it a unique specimen of its kind. Hera's parents are Salma and Hercules, who also reside at the zoo.

Conservation Efforts for Rare Species Continue

In another recent development at Kyiv Zoo, a muntjac deer named Mo, who suffered a severe jaw fracture from shelling in early November 2025, has now recovered. Despite this trauma, Mo and his mate Milu have welcomed a newborn fawn. Veterinarian Mykhailo Pinchuk noted the challenges in their care:

"We received various recommendations from specialists who visited us, as these animals are very rare. They typically live in cold, snowy regions." - Mykhailo Pinchuk

These events underscore the zoo's ongoing work to preserve rare animal species and ensure their welfare, even amidst challenging circumstances. Hera's birth represents a positive step in supporting the population of the critically endangered Amur leopard, while the recovery and successful breeding of the muntjacs demonstrate animal resilience. The dedicated involvement of veterinarians and specialists highlights the zoo's serious commitment to the care and conservation of these vulnerable animals.
