Wildlife Smuggling Allegations

According to Главком: The founder of the Yalta Zoo Skazka and the Taigan Lion Park has been issued a notice of suspicion in absentia for the unlawful removal of animals from the Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve to the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea. According to investigators, in October 2023, the Crimean businessman entered into an agreement with the occupation-appointed director of the biosphere reserve. This document facilitated the illegal transfer of animals from Askania-Nova to Crimea, triggering a criminal investigation into the matter.

Removal of Animals and Its Consequences

In March 2024, three adult Gray Ukrainian cows were taken from the reserve. Subsequently, in April and June of the same year, an additional 10 Chapman's zebras were removed. The total damages inflicted on the institution are estimated at over 67.3 million hryvnias. Previously, the so-called director of the occupied Askania-Nova reserve, who handed over rare animals to Russia worth more than 22 million hryvnias, was notified of suspicion for violating the laws and customs of war.

Russian occupiers also removed several other specimens from the Askania-Nova zoo, including:

  • Chapman's zebras
  • American bison
  • Przewalski's horses
  • Père David's deer

The removal of these animals was reported by Ruslan Strilets, Ukraine's Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources. This situation has sparked significant concern among conservation organizations and the public, as violations of the laws and customs of war are considered unacceptable.

This case highlights the severe impact of military actions on protected areas and endangered species.

Violations of animal rights and the illegal removal of creatures from their natural habitats can lead to the destruction of biodiversity and a worsening of the ecological situation in the region. Authorities and environmental groups are signaling the urgent need to protect animals from the consequences of conflict, requiring international attention and action to prevent similar crimes in the future.
