Ukrainian Triathlete Receives 3.5-Year Ban for Violating Suspension Terms
Danylo Sapunov Faces a Second Suspension
According to Главком: The International Testing Agency (ITA) has imposed a new 3.5-year ban on Ukrainian triathlete Danylo Sapunov for breaking the rules of a prior disqualification. Sapunov, who was found to have competed while his previous ban was still active, is now prohibited from participating in any sports events until April 7, 2027. This case highlights the strict enforcement of anti-doping regulations, even for retired athletes.
The 43-year-old athlete had previously served a four-year doping suspension, from October 2019 to October 2023, for the use of erythropoietin (EPO). The investigation leading to this additional penalty was initiated by the Ironman organization after he violated the terms of that initial ban.
The Career of Danylo Sapunov
Sapunov's career is notable: he competed in three Olympic Games, representing Kazakhstan at the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Games, and Ukraine at the 2012 London Olympics. Over his career, he participated in 178 international events, securing 14 gold medals. He retired from professional triathlon in 2016.

This incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to anti-doping standards, as repeated violations can have severe and lasting consequences for an athlete's legacy.
