Ancient Clay Earring Discovered in Japan

According to НВ — Техно: Archaeologists in Japan have uncovered a 2900-year-old clay earring adorned with an intricate spiral pattern and traces of red pigment at the Shinpukuji burial mound in Saitama. This delicate artifact, measuring approximately eight centimeters in diameter, was found during excavations conducted in 2026. It showcases the advanced craftsmanship of artisans from the late Jomon period. The burial site context adds significant historical value to the find.

The earring’s overall diameter is about 8 centimeters, with the hole for wearing measuring roughly 4 centimeters across. Some clay elements are as thin as one millimeter. The presence of red pigment indicates the use of coloring techniques in ancient craftsmanship. Its design bears similarities to ornamental patterns found at other archaeological sites in Japan, including the Sennami-Yato site in Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture, and the Shimofuda site in Tofu, Tokyo.

Significance and Public Presentation

This earring will be publicly exhibited for the first time at a symposium commemorating a century of excavations at the Shinpukuji mound, scheduled for November 14, 2026. The discovery underscores the importance of archaeological research in the region. Earlier, in 2022, archaeologist Akihiro Iwata announced the discovery of stone and clay ninja weapons in Saitama Prefecture linked to the Hojo clan. He noted:

'These items were made from stone and clay rather than metal, unlike later examples.' Akihiro Iwata

Artifacts such as flat stones and clay pellets, believed to be precursors to shuriken and makibishi, highlight the rich cultural heritage of the area.

The new earring find at Shinpukuji continues a legacy of archaeological work in Japan that frequently reveals fresh insights into ancient civilizations. These discoveries not only deepen our understanding of Japan’s history but also shed light on the technologies and artistic traditions that flourished thousands of years ago.

This earring provides valuable insight into Japan’s cultural heritage and exemplifies how archaeology can illuminate the artistry and craftsmanship of distant eras. It also reinforces the historical significance of the Saitama region, where ongoing excavations open new avenues for exploring the lives and customs of past societies. Such research plays a vital role in preserving cultural memory while promoting archaeology as an essential science for reconstructing human history.
