Wave Energy Device MARMOK-A-5 Undergoes Trials

According to НВ — Техно: On May 23, 2026, testing began on the MARMOK-A-5 wave energy converter off the coast of Spain. Standing 140 feet (42 meters) tall and weighing 160 tons, this cutting-edge device is anchored at a depth of nearly 90 meters. The trials are taking place at the BiMEP platform, located near Spain’s northern coastline. Wave energy is seen as a promising but underutilized renewable resource, and this project aims to help change that.

How the MARMOK-A-5 Works and Why It Matters

The MARMOK-A-5 operates on the oscillating water column principle, which converts wave motion into electricity. Its prototype peak power output is 30 kW. This device is part of the EuropeWave program, a €20 million initiative. It was developed by the company IDOM (Oceantec), with Borja de Miguel from IDOM mentioned in the report.

An earlier version of the MARMOK-A-5 successfully operated at sea starting in 2016. Standing 140 feet tall, the current model is designed to unlock wave energy production for European power grids, according to IDOM (Oceantec). These tests represent a major step forward for renewable energy technologies in Europe.

The MARMOK-A-5 trials highlight Europe’s growing commitment to renewable energy sources that can reduce dependence on conventional power. Successful deployment of such technologies could significantly reshape the region’s energy landscape, cutting carbon emissions and boosting energy security.

This progress may also attract further investment into other renewable energy projects, positively impacting Europe’s economy and environment.
