50-Kilogram Warhead from a Geran-2 Drone Neutralized Inside an Odesa Apartment
High-Stakes Operation to Disarm a Hostile Drone in Odesa
According to Главком: In Odesa, police bomb disposal experts carried out an extremely challenging operation to neutralize an enemy Geran-2 drone that had struck a residential building in the Prymorskyi district but failed to detonate. The incident occurred when the unmanned aerial vehicle landed on the 11th floor of an 18-story apartment block, leaving behind debris, an engine, and electronic components.
Officers from the police explosive ordnance disposal unit discovered an unexploded warhead containing 50 kilograms of explosive material. According to the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa Oblast,
“bomb technicians found fragments of the Geran-2, its engine, electronic parts, and an unexploded 50-kilogram warhead inside the apartment on the 11th floor.”
Evacuation and Destruction of the Hazardous Payload
Specialists from the bomb disposal unit, working alongside rescue personnel, conducted an emergency evacuation of residents from the danger zone and set up a mobile assistance point. The operation lasted several hours and required specialized high-altitude equipment, including an articulated boom lift.
“The drone carried a deadly threat-an unexploded warhead with 50 kilograms of explosives. Thanks to the professional efforts of law enforcement, the danger to the building's residents was eliminated,”
police officials stated.
The unexploded lethal payload was successfully lowered to the ground and transported to a safe location at a training range, where bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled detonation. Fortunately, no civilian casualties or injuries were reported.
This incident follows other cases in Odesa where a Russian drone struck a 24-story residential building, becoming lodged in the facade near the 15th floor. These events underscore the critical role of law enforcement professionalism in ensuring public safety amid ongoing threats.
The drone incident highlights the growing danger posed by unmanned aerial vehicles in military conflicts, which represent a serious risk to civilian infrastructure. Given the number of similar occurrences in Odesa and other cities, the importance of emergency services being prepared to respond to such situations is undeniable. These events also emphasize the need for stronger security measures and regular training to ensure rapid responses to drone-related threats.
As the situation in Odesa continues to escalate, recent drone strikes have raised significant concerns for residents. Just hours before the disarmament operation of the Geran-2 drone, another incident resulted in injuries to civilians, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by aerial attacks.
