One of the popular fish species is disappearing in Ukraine

According to glavcom.ua: In many rivers of Ukraine, the freshwater golden crucian carp, which was once a fairly common species, is no longer present. Julia Kutsokon, an ichthyologist at the I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the NAS of Ukraine, noted that this fish used to be widespread, but due to artificial reservoirs that appeared in the last century, the golden crucian carp has become less common.

The expert emphasized that the possible reasons for the disappearance of this fish species are competition with other crucian species and changes in habitat. Currently, the golden crucian carp is almost not found in many rivers, only in the Desna River and in floodplain water bodies, but its population has also sharply decreased here.

«We really do not know whether the silver crucian carp is indigenous to our waters, or whether this species was introduced earlier, not only in Ukraine but also in Europe,» Julia Kutsokon noted.

The golden crucian carp, which can live up to 10-12 years, has become less common in water bodies where algae die off constantly. This has also led to the disappearance of this fish species from many rivers. Currently, the golden crucian carp remains only in the Desna River and in floodplain water bodies, but its population here is also very limited.

The disappearance of the golden crucian carp from Ukraine's rivers is related to the influence of artificial reservoirs, competition with other fish species, and changes in habitat. To date, this fish species is practically absent in many Ukrainian rivers, remaining only in some regions of the country in limited numbers.
