Steam Introduces Stricter Game Submission Guidelines Amid Growing Review Backlog

According to НВ — Техно: Valve has implemented updated submission requirements for games on Steam in response to a surge in the review queue, which now extends up to 12 business days. This backlog increase is largely driven by a rapid rise in games incorporating generative artificial intelligence. Previously, review periods typically ranged from 3 to 5 days. The new measures aim to reduce rejections and repeated submissions without imposing outright bans on AI-generated content.

Key Obligations for Developers Under the New Policy

Developers must now adhere to several new stipulations, including:

  • Launching their game on Steam for at least 5 minutes before submitting it for review.
  • Confirming the inclusion of DirectX libraries and Microsoft Visual C++ components.
  • Verifying achievements, Steam Cloud save file paths, and proper categorization of screenshots.

Valve representatives acknowledged that developers have expressed concerns over delays disrupting their marketing strategies and release schedules. Notably, in October, nearly half of the games on Steam reported using generative AI to create content. Valve emphasized that these updated procedures represent an initial phase, with potential further adjustments to the submission review process under consideration.

This shift reflects the growing impact of generative AI on the video game industry, as more creators leverage cutting-edge technology to produce content. Valve’s approach seeks to balance timely reviews with maintaining quality standards on the Steam platform. These policies may evolve in the future to keep pace with technological advancements and the needs of the gaming community.

As Valve updates its submission guidelines, the platform is also facing challenges on other fronts. Recently, a significant outage affected users in the US and Europe, causing disruptions and errors that further complicate the gaming experience. This highlights the ongoing issues within Steam’s infrastructure as it adapts to increasing demands from developers and players alike.
