Warsha Sends Kyiv 90 Generators Amid Critical Heating Crisis
Warsaw's Aid to Kyiv
According to Главком: In a show of solidarity, the city of Warsaw has dispatched a shipment of 90 generators of varying capacities to its sister city, Kyiv. This aid is intended to help the Ukrainian capital cope with the aftermath of attacks on its critical infrastructure. Kyiv's municipal services are engaged in extensive emergency repairs to restore utilities, particularly heating systems, as the city faces a severe winter.
Heating and Water Supply Situation
As of the evening of January 20, Kyiv has fully restored its water supply, which had been disrupted by a Russian attack. Despite this positive development regarding water, the heating situation remains critical. As of 8 a.m. on January 23, heating was still absent in 1,940 apartment buildings across the city. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko:
“Currently, 5,600 multi-apartment buildings remain without heating.” - Vitali Klitschko
Mayor Klitschko has repeatedly urged Kyiv residents to consider leaving the city if possible. On January 23, he once again called on inhabitants to evacuate, given the critical state of essential services-heating, water, and electricity. The Kyiv City Military Administration has not confirmed reports of a mass exodus from the capital, but the overall situation remains tense. These infrastructure attacks are part of a wider Russian strategy targeting Ukrainian civilian energy grids during winter.
Thus, Warsaw continues to provide support to Kyiv, while local authorities work to resolve heating supply issues amidst ongoing attacks on infrastructure.
The situation in Kyiv starkly illustrates the consequences of warfare on a city's basic life-support systems. Support from Warsaw represents a crucial aspect of international solidarity during this difficult time. Simultaneously, the mayor's calls for evacuation underscore the severity of the crisis facing the capital's residents and highlight the urgent need to restore municipal services.
