The cost of seasonal vegetables: analysts compared prices for cucumbers and tomatoes in major retail chains
Summer is the time for fresh vegetables, but their cost always influences our purchases. An analysis of the pricing policy of major retail chains conducted by the Ministry of Finance analysts in early July showed significant differences in prices for popular seasonal products.
Let's start with tomatoes, where the price discrepancy is most obvious.
According to hvylya.net: Currently, the lowest price for red tomatoes can be found at Novus for 72.99 UAH per kilogram, while at Auchan the price reaches 118.60 UAH. Prices for pink tomatoes range from 103.90 UAH at Metro to 129.00 UAH at Novus. As for the cream variety, prices vary from 99.90 to 111.08 UAH, with Auchan offering the most affordable ones.
In contrast, cucumber prices have decreased compared to June. The cheapest regular cucumbers can be purchased at Novus, while short cucumbers are available at Auchan for 39.90 UAH per kilogram. Smooth cucumbers are slightly more expensive, ranging from 47.90 UAH at Metro to 68.80 UAH at Megamarket. The 'Estafeta' variety cucumbers remain the most expensive, but their price at Auchan is 73.80 UAH per kilogram, which is lower than before.
Vegetable prices constantly fluctuate, so it is important to closely monitor their dynamics when planning purchases.
At the beginning of July, vegetable prices in Ukraine varied depending on the retail chain, with noticeable differences not only in prices for the same vegetables but also in price dynamics compared to the previous month. Therefore, consumers should carefully observe the pricing policy and choose the optimal moment for their purchases.
