Their findings demonstrate a neural pathway originating from sensory neurons in the nose that influences brain regions responsible for emotional and stress responses.

Anxiety disorders affect approximately 359 million people worldwide, making them the most common mental health conditions. This study, conducted on rodents, particularly mice, revealed that olfactory sensory neurons respond not only to odors but also to the mechanical airflow during inhalation and exhalation. Signals from these neurons travel to mitral cells in the olfactory bulb and then proceed to interneurons in the perirhinal cortex, as well as glutamatergic neurons in the posterior part of the basolateral amygdala.

The Critical Role of Breathing Techniques

The amygdala plays a central role in generating anxiety and stress reactions. The research showed that the calming effect on anxiety depends on the breathing rate: slow nasal breathing, roughly half the speed of a normal breathing rhythm, significantly reduces anxiety levels, whereas faster breathing intensifies it. When the connection between the olfactory bulb and perirhinal cortex was chemically blocked, anxiety regulation through breathing ceased.

The scientists have named this newly identified circuit the "nasal-limbic mechanism," which appears to be common among most mammals, including humans. This discovery lays the foundation for developing non-invasive anxiety treatments using controlled breathing exercises, offering a promising step forward in mental health care.
