Discovery of a Heat-Resistant Amoeba Species

According to НВ — Техно: Researchers exploring the geothermal springs of Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California have identified a previously unknown single-celled amoeba species, named Incendiamoeba cascadensis. Remarkably, this microorganism can survive and reproduce at temperatures reaching up to 63 degrees Celsius, establishing an unprecedented record for heat tolerance among eukaryotic organisms. The study was led by scientists Angela Oliverio and Beryl Rappaport, focusing on the unique environments within the park’s geothermal features.

This species remains active at 64 degrees Celsius, displaying the ability to move under extreme heat conditions. Prior to this discovery, it was believed that eukaryotes could not endure temperatures above 62 degrees Celsius. When exposed to temperatures beyond 64 degrees Celsius, Incendiamoeba cascadensis enters a dormant, protective state akin to hibernation, enabling it to withstand otherwise lethal heat.

Complex Cellular Architecture and Evolutionary Adaptations

Incendiamoeba cascadensis possesses a sophisticated cellular structure, including distinct organelles, an internal skeleton, and genome protection mechanisms. It also features a unique array of protein components with unusually strong molecular bonds. When subjected to heat stress, the amoeba activates previously unknown genes, suggesting evolutionary adaptations that contribute to its exceptional thermotolerance. Scientists believe this resilience results from a combination of multiple adaptations rather than a single gene. These insights offer valuable perspectives on the biological strategies organisms use to survive in extreme environments.

The identification of this heat-tolerant amoeba has significant implications for evolutionary biology and ecology research. Understanding how this organism withstands such extreme temperatures could pave the way for innovations in bioengineering and medical fields. Moreover, studying thermophilic organisms like Incendiamoeba cascadensis might inspire the development of novel biomaterials and techniques designed to function under harsh thermal conditions. Given the accelerating impacts of global climate change, uncovering how life adapts to extreme heat is increasingly crucial for anticipating future ecological shifts.
