DNA Test Reveals Soldier Buried in May is Alive in Captivity

Exhumation of Military Bohdan Vovk
Тест ДНК підтвердив, що солдат, похований у травні, насправді живий та перебуває в полоні.

The Case of Bohdan Vovk

According to Главком: In May 2025, a funeral was held for soldier Bohdan Vovk. However, his family later received video evidence and official confirmation that he was, in fact, alive and being held as a prisoner of war by Russian forces. Following this, law enforcement exhumed the body that had been buried under Vovk's name. A molecular-genetic examination confirmed that the person interred in May 2025 was someone else. The remains were returned to the family for a proper reburial.

The funeral took place on May 23, 2025, in the village of Humenets, Lviv region. In a shocking development for his relatives, the Russian side listed the Ukrainian soldier in prisoner rosters in June. Bohdan's brother provided DNA samples for the analysis, which proved crucial in resolving the case. His sister, Natalia Holova, stated:

“Personally, I didn't need the DNA confirmation anymore, because I already had all the confirmations from the Coordination Headquarters that Bohdan was in captivity. I simply wanted the exhumation to happen so the body of the serviceman we buried could be returned to his native home.” - Natalia Holova

A Wider Pattern of Uncertainty

This case is not isolated. During a prisoner exchange on February 5, Nazar Daletsky, who had been considered dead since September 2022, was returned to Ukraine. Furthermore, Olha Piroh from Bukovyna discovered the whereabouts of her husband, who went missing on the front in 2023, a year and a half later by recognizing him in a video from captivity. These incidents highlight the complex and painful reality for families of soldiers officially declared deceased, who may actually be prisoners of war. The fog of war and chaotic frontline conditions often lead to such tragic misidentifications.

This situation reflects not only individual tragedies but also systemic issues faced by military families during the conflict. The lack of clear information about a soldier's status can lead to agonizing errors, such as burying someone who is still alive. It underscores the critical importance of prisoner exchange mechanisms and the need for meticulous documentation of all cases involving missing persons.

Incidents like these demonstrate an urgent need for improved communication between state agencies and soldiers' families to prevent similar tragic mistakes in the future.
