From November 1, speed limits in Ukraine are changing: what awaits drivers

Driver restrictions behind the wheel
З новими обмеженнями швидкості, які впроваджуються з 1 листопада, українські водії повинні бути готові до змін на дорогах.

During the cold season, visibility worsens, the daylight hours shorten, and weather conditions can lead to ice and complicate movement. Drivers are urged to be attentive and maintain a safe distance.

Starting November 1, a so-called 'winter speed mode' will officially be introduced in populated areas of Ukraine. This means that the increased summer limits of up to 80 km/h on certain road sections will temporarily be canceled – everywhere where appropriate signs are installed, the speed is again limited to 50 km/h. The winter norms will traditionally be in effect until April 1.

Speeding fines remain unchanged

The Department of Safety and Street Infrastructure reports that over 300 automatic violation detection cameras are currently operating on the roads of Ukraine. Speeding fines remain unchanged:

  • for exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h – 340 UAH;

  • for exceeding by more than 50 km/h – 1700 UAH.

Outside populated areas, including on highways and roads for cars, the current speed norms remain unchanged.

It is worth noting that a draft law No. 13314 has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada, which proposes to reduce the allowable 'threshold of impunity' from +20 km/h to +10 km/h. The document is currently under consideration, and if adopted, fines will be applied for lower speed excesses.

Comment: Ukrainian drivers should be prepared for the introduction of the winter speed mode on the roads, which may ensure greater safety under difficult weather conditions. It is also worth paying close attention to possible changes in legislation regarding speeding fines, which may become stricter.
