A Volynian built a house from wood and clay: how he has lived for 36 years
70-year-old Vasyl Kravets from the village of Horaymivka in Volyn built an ecological house from wood and clay by himself. He shares his experience with other villagers, helping them construct similar houses. Several such buildings have already appeared in the village, and Vasyl built the first one for his family 36 years ago.
Kravets' farm turned out to be very profitable since it’s easy to find the necessary materials for construction in Polissia. Vasyl emphasizes that this is an affordable and economical way to secure housing. He was inspired by a project from neighbors in a nearby district where a similar house had already been built.
“The wood was harvested from aspen – aspen wood. They were dried and already dry wood was used. Why aspen? There are such insects that eat the wood, called woodworms. Woodworms do not eat aspen,” explained the master.
In the new house with six rooms and a kitchen lives the Kravets couple. His wife Lyubov said that in summer it is very cool inside, and in winter they heat the house with wood - one stove heats two rooms. To build the house, they needed almost 10 cubic meters of wood.
Dmytro Ky s lyuk, a lecturer at the Department of Construction and Civil Engineering of the Lutsk university, emphasized that a house made of wood and clay has many advantages, including environmental friendliness and durability.
