Beware of possible troubles when trying to exchange 100 dollars: Ukrainians warned
Increase in the number of counterfeit dollar bills
According to hvylya.net: The National Bank of Ukraine reported an increase in the number of counterfeit dollar bills in circulation. According to statistics, 3.4 counterfeits have been recorded for every million genuine banknotes, which is three times more than in the previous period.
Despite the rise in these figures, the situation remains better than in previous years when 7.1 counterfeit bills were detected per million dollar banknotes. Nevertheless, experts urge citizens to be more attentive during currency operations.
Hundred dollar bills are the main target of fraudsters
According to the NBU analysis, criminals most often falsify banknotes with a denomination of 100 US dollars. The highest risks arise during exchanges in non-bank institutions such as markets, railway stations, and street exchange points. Currently, there are two series of hundred dollar bills in circulation: those issued before 2013 and more recent ones with enhanced security features.
Signs of authenticity of American currency
A genuine hundred dollar bill contains the following signs:
- Watermark visible when held against the light
- Holographic strip embedded in banknotes after 2013
- 'Bell in the inkwell' feature that changes color when tilted (for new bills)
- High-quality thick paper with a textured surface
- Microtext along the perimeter of the bill
Experts emphasize that banks use specialized equipment to verify the authenticity of currency, making official exchanges the safest option.
The message about the increase in the number of counterfeit dollar bills and experts' recommendations to be vigilant during currency operations indicate a significant risk of financial fraud. It is crucial to follow the recommendations for verifying the authenticity of currency, especially when exchanging money in non-bank institutions.
