Ukrainian Lawyer Detained for Fabricating Military Draft Notices, Court Imposes Restrictive Measure
Lawyer Arrested for Offering Fraudulent Evasion Services
According to Главком: A lawyer in Zaporizhzhia has been detained for offering fraudulent services to help clients avoid military mobilization and travel abroad. According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, the lawyer initially charged a client 20,000 hryvnias for a fake draft notice to change their military registration location. He later offered to have the client removed from the military register as unfit for service, quoting a price of 18,000 US dollars for this service. This case highlights ongoing efforts to combat corruption and draft evasion during Ukraine's state of martial law.
Law Enforcement Actions and Evidence
The arrest occurred as the lawyer was receiving payment for his services. During searches, authorities found blank draft notices for a Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support, along with nearly 20,000 US dollars and 5,500 euros. The lawyer has been formally notified of suspicion under several articles of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, including Part 3 of Article 15, Part 3 of Article 332, and Part 2 of Article 369-2.
A court imposed a personal recognizance measure on the lawyer, but prosecutors have appealed this decision. Notably, law enforcement had previously uncovered and blocked three new schemes for evading mobilization, leading to the detention of four organizers of similar frauds.
This incident underscores the persistent issue of draft evasion in Ukraine, particularly amid the ongoing conflict. The lawyer's arrest and the discovery of fraudulent schemes demonstrate active efforts by authorities to combat corruption and legal violations in the military sphere.
The prosecution's appeal against the court's chosen restrictive measure further indicates the seriousness with which the state is treating such cases and its intent to enforce mobilization laws strictly.
