Romania’s Men’s Volleyball Team Announces Boycott

According to Главком: Romania’s men’s national volleyball squad has decided to boycott training and matches due to a clash with the Romanian Volleyball Federation over medical insurance terms. This drastic move now threatens the team’s participation in the Golden EuroLeague and the 2025 European Championships, which are scheduled to take place on home soil in Cluj-Napoca. Currently, the players are training at reduced intensity at a camp in Mioveni, signaling how serious the standoff has become.

Roots of the Conflict

The dispute centers on medical coverage conditions. The athletes are demanding financial and legal guarantees that would cover them while they serve the national team and also protect them after returning to their clubs. Past injuries have brought this issue into sharp focus: Codrin Mocanu, who tore his Achilles tendon in 2022, and Razvan Baziluc, who suffered a shoulder injury during a national team camp in 2025, both had their treatments paid for by the Federation. However, their clubs reduced their salaries during rehabilitation, fueling broader resentment among players.

Attorney Sabin Gherdan is representing the athletes and is actively involved in resolving the matter. Federation President Adin Cojocaru has already put forward a new insurance proposal, with a premium cost of 1,020 lei per insured player. Still, the total coverage amount-122,500 lei per athlete with no daily compensation-has raised further concerns among the squad.

The team’s first EuroLeague match, against Latvia, is scheduled for June 5-just 13 days away-and the boycott could have serious repercussions. This situation mirrors an incident two years ago, when key players from Ukraine’s national volleyball team also refused to play, highlighting how medical insurance remains a critical issue in professional sports.

This conflict between the players and the Romanian Volleyball Federation underscores not only the importance of medical insurance for athletes but also the broader challenges professional teams face regarding safety and the protection of their rights.

If unresolved, the standoff could lead to major consequences for Romania’s participation in international competitions, ultimately affecting the growth of volleyball in the country. This case reflects a wider issue faced by many national teams, emphasizing the urgent need for reforms in sports governance.

The ongoing conflict in Romanian sports regarding athlete welfare is not limited to volleyball. Recently, another incident has surfaced involving the suspension of a gymnastics coach over allegations of abuse as well as a scandal surrounding a substantial salary. This raises questions about the treatment of athletes across different sports in Romania. For more insights into this troubling situation, read about the recent gymnastics coaching controversy.
