Ukraine Secures Release of 157 Prisoners of War, Including Some Held for Four Years
Ukrainian Prisoners of War Return Home
According to ХВИЛЯ: On February 5, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the return of 157 Ukrainian prisoners of war from Russian captivity. Among those freed are defenders who had been held for nearly four years. In his evening address, he expressed happiness for the families, relatives, and comrades who have finally been reunited with their loved ones. These prisoner exchanges are complex diplomatic achievements in the ongoing war.
“Among the men returned today are those who were in captivity for almost four years. An extraordinarily long and difficult time, considering all the Russian brutality. I am happy for the families, for the relatives, for the comrades who have waited for their own,” Zelenskyy noted.
Negotiations Announced and Frontline Updates
The President also announced plans for upcoming negotiation rounds, which are likely to take place in America. The Ukrainian negotiation team reported on the results of meetings in the United Arab Emirates with representatives from the United States and Russia. Furthermore, Major General Khmara reported on new operations by Ukraine's Security Service. The military struck a Russian training ground, indicating an intensification of combat activities.
Zelenskyy cited data on Russian military losses. According to his figures, the occupiers lost 35,000 personnel killed and seriously wounded in December, and 30,000 in January. Additionally, during the visit of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, an agreement was reached on the joint production of drones. Sweden, for its part, will provide Ukraine with a new energy package worth $100 million.
“I want to thank them for their ability to reach even such objects as a training ground for launching 'orishnyky' [a slang term for rockets]. Our flamingos have done their job,” the president added.
The return of Ukrainians from Russian captivity is a significant humanitarian aspect of the ongoing conflict. It demonstrates the efforts of the Ukrainian authorities in conducting negotiations and finding ways to free their citizens. Simultaneously, the intensification of combat actions and new strikes on Russian objects may indicate a strengthening of Ukraine's military strategy amid increasing pressure from the adversary.
