Zelenskyy Calls for European Mediation in Peace Talks, With New Round Possible Next Week
Europe's Role in Peace Negotiations
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized the critical need for European nations to be directly involved in peace negotiations. He made these remarks during an online briefing with journalists, stating that Ukraine will insist on the participation of European countries in the process, according to a report by the publication 'Hlavkom'.
A new round of talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and the Russian Federation could potentially take place as early as next week. Switzerland or Turkey are being considered as possible locations for these negotiations. The precise timing of the meeting is contingent on developments in the Middle East. Zelenskyy recently held a meeting with the Ukrainian delegation involved in the peace talks; however, a planned trilateral meeting was postponed due to the conflict in the Middle East.
'In all negotiations, in any format, I have always done everything to ensure Europe is involved at the level of leaders, at the level of National Security Advisors. And Ukraine has always been not just the initiator.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy underscored the necessity of a European presence at the negotiating table. He added: 'But we must do everything ourselves to ensure we have Europe with us. Because Ukraine is part of Europe and a future part of the European Union.'
Including European nations in the peace process could significantly shape the course and outcome of diplomatic efforts, given Europe's substantial political and economic influence in the region. As the war in Ukraine continues, securing a unified diplomatic front with European partners is seen as vital for Kyiv's leverage. This engagement could help stabilize the situation in Ukraine and strengthen the country's ties with the EU.
