Poland's Highest Honor Returned by Zelensky After Diplomatic Snub
Stripping of the Order of the White Eagle
According to Главком: On the evening of June 19, Polish President Karol Nawrocki decided to revoke the Order of the White Eagle from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This move came amid growing tensions between the two nations, triggered by the fact that Nawrocki was not invited to the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC 2026), scheduled for June 25–26 in Gdańsk. Instead, Poland will be represented at the conference by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The Order of the White Eagle is one of Poland's most prestigious state decorations.
Zelensky Meets with Nawrocki
In a recent interview, Volodymyr Zelensky shared details of his meeting with Nawrocki, which took place at a summit in Bucharest, Romania. During that encounter, Nawrocki expressed his displeasure over not receiving an invitation to the Ukraine recovery conference.
“We met, I believe, on the sidelines of the Bucharest summit, and he told me openly that he does not support the Ukraine recovery conference in a format where he, as president, was not invited,” Zelensky stated.
Zelensky linked Nawrocki’s actions to domestic political struggles in Poland, noting that
“I see this solely as an electoral process. President Karol Nawrocki is fighting for his party’s prime ministerial seat against Prime Minister Tusk.”
He warned that such behavior could damage relations between the two peoples. “You cannot earn political dividends from hatred, because in the long run it will lead to poor relations between nations,” the Ukrainian president emphasized.
On June 20, Zelensky mailed the Order of the White Eagle back to Karol Nawrocki. Notably, former Ukrainian presidents Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Yushchenko, and Petro Poroshenko have also previously declined this Polish honor. The official reason given for the revocation of the award is the naming of one Ukrainian military unit after the Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).
This situation highlights the complexity and strain in Ukraine-Poland relations, which could have lasting consequences. The return of the Order of the White Eagle and the criticism of the Polish president's actions signal an escalation of the conflict between the two countries. Deteriorating ties may affect cooperation across multiple areas, including:
- economic
- cultural
- political
This is especially critical given the current challenges facing both nations. Former Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski has also voiced concern about the potential negative impact of a mass exodus of Ukrainians on Poland’s economy, underscoring the importance of stable bilateral relations for both countries.
The recent decision by Zelensky to return the Order of the White Eagle highlights a pattern of similar actions by previous Ukrainian leaders. For instance, Yushchenko also declined this Polish honor in the past, reflecting ongoing diplomatic tensions and the complex historical relationship between Ukraine and Poland. Understanding these dynamics provides deeper insight into the current political landscape.
