Zelenskyy on Geneva Talks: Ceasefire Progress Made, But Political Issues Remain Stalled
Geneva Negotiations
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has received the initial report from his nation's delegation following talks held in Geneva on February 17-18, 2026. The negotiations involved representatives from Ukraine, the United States, and the Russian Federation. The military subgroup achieved significant understanding on the mechanisms for a ceasefire, with monitoring to be conducted with American involvement. These talks represent a critical diplomatic effort to find a path toward ending the prolonged conflict. However, the political negotiations remain extremely difficult, with no substantial breakthrough yet achieved.
The Geneva talks concluded on February 18, after the first day of trilateral discussions on February 17. Zelenskyy emphasized that all three sides were constructive within the military track. According to him, the military officials understand how to monitor a ceasefire, provided there is the political will to implement one. Significant agreements were reached, but details, such as the technical nuances of monitoring, will be further elaborated by Major General Gnatov upon his return.
Political Aspects of the Negotiations
Progress on the political track remains complex and challenging. Zelenskyy noted that sensitive issues were discussed during the talks, including the situation in eastern Ukraine and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). The main stumbling block continues to be the territorial question, as Moscow demands the official cession of territories. Furthermore, U.S. President Donald Trump is demanding swift decisions from Kyiv. Zelenskyy has given the Ukrainian delegation a clear mandate: to do everything possible to make the negotiations productive and to increase the chances for peaceful solutions.
The developments in Geneva suggest that progress on the military component could lay a foundation for future advances on political questions. However, given the sensitivity of the topics under discussion, such as territorial issues, the chances of reaching a compromise remain minimal. The success of the negotiations will depend not only on a constructive approach from all sides but also on a readiness for concessions that could impact regional stability.
