Address by the President of Ukraine

According to Главком: In his nightly address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed deep concern over Russian attacks on Ukraine and called for intensified diplomatic efforts to secure air defense missile supplies. During this address, he held a meeting with Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov to discuss the urgent need for Europe to develop its own missile production capabilities.

Attacks by the Russian Army

In the early hours of February 17, the Russian army struck 12 regions of Ukraine, wounding nine people, including children. The assault damaged more than ten residential buildings and railway infrastructure. President Zelenskyy noted that Russia continues to demonstrate aggression, even as new negotiation formats are beginning. This relentless bombardment highlights the critical need for a sustainable, long-term solution for Ukraine's air defense.

'Even on the day new negotiation formats are launched in Geneva-trilateral, bilateral with America-Russia marks it with a strike. This very clearly demonstrates what Russia wants and what they are set on.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Zelenskyy also stated that various meetings with partners are planned for the coming weeks, during which the issue of producing air defense missiles in Europe will be discussed. 'Europe needs its own production of air defense missiles. All types of missiles that are genuinely needed,' he emphasized, adding that while some steps are being taken to build production, the pace of this work remains insufficient.

The President also recalled that there were promises of licenses, but America did not agree to these proposals. 'We proposed production both in Ukraine and jointly with NATO partners in the region-with Romania, with Poland, and so on,' Zelenskyy added. He expressed confidence that Europe can provide itself with the necessary volume and strength of defense but urged for faster progress toward this goal.

In conclusion, the Ukrainian President highlighted the massive strike carried out by the Russians, noting that 29 missiles were launched, of which 25 were successfully intercepted. 'This is an important result of our air defense, and it once again underscores that air defense is a daily necessity,' Zelenskyy said, thanking all partners for their support. The successful interception rate demonstrates the effectiveness of existing systems but also their heavy reliance on finite, externally supplied munitions.

The recent events underscore the importance of developing and strengthening Ukraine's air defense in the context of constant threats from Russia. Zelenskyy's calls to accelerate missile production in Europe reflect an attempt to reduce dependence on external suppliers and create a more effective defense system. The successful implementation of these initiatives could significantly impact Ukraine's security and its ability to withstand aggression.
