For the First Time in Seven Years, Zelenskyy Holds One-on-One Talks with All Parliamentary Faction Leaders
Presidential Meetings with Parliamentary Faction Leaders
According to Главком: In a significant move to rebuild ties between Ukraine's executive and legislative branches, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently held individual 30-minute meetings with the leaders of eight parliamentary factions and groups-a first in his seven-year presidency. These discussions marked a key step in restoring cooperation between the president and parliament. The meetings were attended by Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk, Head of the Presidential Office Kyrylo Budanov, and David Arakhamia, leader of the Servant of the People faction.
Meeting Participants
Eight members of parliament were invited to take part in these talks, including:
- Petro Poroshenko (European Solidarity)
- Yulia Tymoshenko (Batkivshchyna)
- Oleksandra Ustinova (Holos)
- Oleh Kulinich (Dovira)
- Ihor Palytsia (Za Maibutnie)
- Yuriy Boyko (Platform for Life and Peace)
- Antonina Slavitska (Vidnovlennia Ukrainy)
- Dmytro Razumkov (Rozumna Polityka)
Most participants declined to disclose details of the discussions, citing confidentiality.
Yuriy Boyko revealed that the conversation topics included peace, a ceasefire, and the logic of moving toward peace. Oleksandra Ustinova brought a list of over ten questions from her faction, covering unsigned draft laws, rotations, demobilization, and the progress of negotiations. She noted:
“These questions concerned unsigned draft laws, rotations, demobilization, the course of negotiations... This was my first meeting with the president in this format, so I walked in and said right away that I had many questions for him. He calmly said, 'Go ahead,' and ultimately answered everything.”
Petro Poroshenko described the meeting as the first face-to-face conversation in many years. He stated that both sides agreed to hold such meetings regularly, emphasizing that 'in conditions where Ukraine is fighting a war for survival, dialogue with parliament and restoring its agency is important.' Poroshenko also noted that the state faces too many complex challenges that can only be overcome through joint efforts by the government and opposition.
Oleh Kulinich, meanwhile, stressed the importance of a unified stance for victory, noting that since the formation of their group, they have supported the president’s initiatives and Ukraine’s course toward European integration. Antonina Slavitska highlighted that communication in this format occurred for the first time and expressed both sides' intentions for constructive cooperation, stating:
“At the same time, it would be wrong to disclose any confidential details from the meeting, as it could harm the establishment of constructive cooperation between the legislative branch and the president.”
These meetings represent a pivotal moment in reviving dialogue between the president and parliament, which could positively influence the country's political landscape. Amid current challenges, particularly the ongoing war and the need for consolidated efforts, restoring effective communication between branches of government is critically important for Ukraine's stability and development. Regular meetings may foster greater coherence in decision-making and the implementation of strategic initiatives, potentially enhancing public perception of the government.
In light of these significant discussions, it's essential to note that Zelenskyy's recent closed-door meeting with his party's parliamentary faction also focused on urgent issues related to the ongoing conflict. This meeting aimed to align party strategies and responses to the war, further emphasizing the president's commitment to fostering collaboration within the legislative framework.
