New Sanctions from Zelenskyy Target 10 Russian Telecom Operators
Sanctions Imposed on Russian Firms
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has enacted a National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) decision, slapping sanctions on ten Russian mobile network operators and internet providers. These measures target companies supplying communication services to occupation forces in Ukraine's temporarily occupied territories. The Ukrainian government aims to align these sanctions with its international partners.
The blacklisted companies include:
- Luhansk Communications
- Mobile Communication Systems
- Amtel-Svyaz (a federal satellite and telecom operator)
- Space Communications
These steps are part of Ukraine's broader push to prevent firms from propping up the occupying authorities.
Sanctions Against Individuals and Entities
Beyond telecom firms, Zelenskyy also signed a decree imposing sanctions on 29 individuals-including judges involved in prosecuting Ukrainians-and 17 legal entities tied to Russian propaganda media outlets. Vladyslav Vlasiuk, a Ukrainian official, stated:
“Any activity in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine is illegal. Companies that knowingly operate there and serve the occupation authorities become toxic to international business and the financial system. That is why Ukraine is imposing sanctions designed to make their operations impossible-not only in the occupied territories but anywhere outside Russia.”
These actions come as part of a larger effort, with the European Commission also unveiling proposals for a 21st sanctions package against Russia. Ukraine continues to work closely with international partners to ensure the effectiveness of sanctions and to isolate the aggressor on all fronts.
By penalizing Russian companies active in the occupied regions, Ukraine underscores its determination to combat aggression and uphold international law. Coordinating these measures with global allies aims to intensify pressure on Russia and further isolate its economy. These moves also reflect Ukraine's broader strategy to counter Russian hostile policies at the international level.
As part of its ongoing efforts to counter Russian aggression, Ukraine has recently implemented significant sanctions targeting not only telecom operators but also military leaders. This comprehensive approach aims to disrupt the operations of those supporting the occupation.
