International Women's Day: A Day for Rights and Peace

According to Главком: March 8th is observed globally as International Women's Day, a date dedicated to women's rights and world peace. The United Nations officially established this commemoration in 1977, though its origins trace back much further. On this significant day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the nation's women, highlighting their crucial role in society and their resilience in the face of contemporary challenges, particularly the ongoing war.

The Historical Roots of the Day

The history of this day dates to March 8, 1857, when textile workers in New York City went on strike, demanding:

  • Equal pay with men;
  • Improved working conditions;
  • A 10-hour workday.

This protest marked an early milestone in the fight for women's rights. Decades later, on March 8, 1908, thousands of women again marched in New York, campaigning for voting rights and protesting against harsh labor conditions and child labor.

“The strength and role of Ukrainian women is not for one day. It is for all 365 days. Ukrainian women are defending the country, waiting for loved ones and supporting their families, raising children under the difficult conditions of war, creating, researching, rescuing, teaching, and healing. Thank you for your determination, leadership, care, and professionalism. Thank you for everything you do every day.”

Volodymyr Zelenskyy

International Women's Day serves as a reminder of the long struggle for gender equality, a movement that has been active since the early 20th century. In Ukraine, the war has amplified the importance of women's contributions, as they not only sustain the economy and social stability but also actively participate in national defense and nurture the next generation. The President's address underscores the state's commitment to recognizing and supporting women's rights across all spheres of public life. This day is widely recognized in many countries, though its focus on rights and peace is distinct from more commercial celebrations.
