This vehicle, which landed in the Sea of Rains on November 17, 1970, was delivered by the Luna-17 mission and became the first remote-controlled rover to operate on another celestial body. It functioned for 11 lunar days, covering approximately 10.5 kilometers before losing contact on October 4, 1971.

Technical Specs and Fresh Insights

Equipped with eight wheels, television cameras, and a French-made laser reflector, Lunokhod-1 was rediscovered decades later. In 2010, the Apache Point Observatory team in New Mexico aimed laser pulses at the rover’s new coordinates. The reflector immediately returned about 2,000 photons-roughly four times stronger than the 750-photon signal from Lunokhod-2, previously the best recorded.

These findings aid in studying the Moon’s librations and core, as the Moon drifts away from Earth at roughly 3.8 centimeters per year. The data also confirm that the Moon possesses a liquid core. In May 2026, the Green Bank Telescope will support NASA’s Artemis II mission, underscoring the importance of lunar exploration for upcoming space endeavors.

The recovery of Lunokhod-1 matters not only for the history of space exploration but also for understanding the Moon’s nature and evolution. Its reconnection with Earth highlights advances in remote sensing technology and opens new possibilities for studying lunar geology.
