Ukrainian Armed Forces Reduce Artillery Fleet

According to ХВИЛЯ: The Ukrainian army intends to reduce its fleet of artillery systems, which currently consists of about 30 different models. The main goal of this process is to transition to the domestic self-propelled artillery system 'Bohdana'. Colonel Andriy Zhuravlyov, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Missile Forces and Artillery Command, noted that the presence of a large fleet of different systems complicates logistics.

Transition to 'Bohdana'

Ukraine is the only country that simultaneously uses such a wide range of armaments. Repairing Western systems often requires sending them abroad, which can take from six months to a year. In this regard, the Ukrainian Armed Forces plan to keep only the most effective samples in service. Among them:

  • 'Bohdana'
  • French CAESAR
  • German PzH 2000 and RCH 155
  • American M777
  • Swedish Archer

In the medium term, 'Bohdana' may become the main artillery system of the Ukrainian military. The presence of a factory in Ukraine allows for technical support and repairs without sending equipment abroad. Colonel Zhuravlyov emphasized that 'Bohdana' is a product of domestic production, and the enterprise provides technical support, organizes repairs of samples that have malfunctioned.

'This will allow Ukraine to maintain the effectiveness of its artillery units by simplifying maintenance and repair processes.' Colonel Andriy Zhuravlyov

Reducing the diversity of artillery systems in the Ukrainian Armed Forces is an important step towards optimizing military resources and improving logistics processes. The transition to 'Bohdana' underscores Ukraine's desire for self-sufficiency in the military sphere, which can have a significant impact on the army's operational readiness. Since technical support and repairs will be carried out in Ukraine, this will help reduce maintenance time and increase its combat capability in critical situations.
