According to Велика українська енциклопедія: Today marks 275 years since the birth of the outstanding French inventor Nicolas Francois Appert. He is known for his invention of canning - a method of preserving food that allows it to be stored for long periods without losing quality. He was born in Chalon-sur-Marne, France, and developed this method in 1795.
Before the advent of canning, food was preserved only by drying, salting, smoking, or in alcohol and vinegar, but it lost quality. We can thank Nicolas Francois Appert for this breakthrough, which forever changed the approach to food storage.
