247 years since the birth of Hryhorii Fedорович Kvitka-Osnovyanenko: how the writer created Ukrainian literature
Today, November 29, marks 247 years since the birth of the famous educator Hryhorii Fedорович Kvitka-Osnovyanenko. He was born in 1778 in the village of Osnova (now Kharkiv), and died in 1843 in the same city. This talented writer is known as a prose writer, publicist, and playwright who wrote in both Ukrainian and Russian.
Kvitka-Osnovyanenko is considered a prominent representative of Ukrainian sentimentalism. His humorous works, especially the letters of Falaley Povynukhin, caused a significant social resonance. In his works, he successfully combined irony and enlightenment ideals.
The writer also turned to theatrical art, creating the satirical comedy “The Arrival from the Capital, or Sharvarok in the District Town” (1827, published in 1840), in which he mocked the vices of a local official.
Thanks to his creativity and active educational activities, Hryhorii Fedорович Kvitka-Osnovyanenko became one of the brightest representatives of Ukrainian literature in the 19th century.
