Nearly 300 Drones Strike Moscow and Refinery, Halting Airport Operations
Drone Attacks Across Russian Territory
According to Главком: During the night of June 18 and into the morning, drones struck multiple locations in Russia, including Moscow. In response, four major Moscow airports-Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky-implemented the "Kover" emergency plan, which halts all flights. Similar restrictions were imposed at airports in Kaluga, Penza, Saratov, Nizhny Novgorod, and Nizhnekamsk. Monitoring data indicates that approximately 300 attack drones were simultaneously active over Russian territory.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that air defense systems were engaged during the assaults. On June 16, a drone damaged a facility at the Moscow Oil Refinery, setting fire to the ELOW-AVT-6 unit. According to the mayor, air defenses intercepted over 60 drones targeting the city that day. The Moscow Oil Refinery, owned by Gazprom Neft, supplies up to 40% of the capital's fuel market. Following the June 16 strike, the plant temporarily suspended operations.
Continued Pressure on Refineries
That same night, drones also hit a refinery in Gukovo, Rostov Oblast, which has been operational since 2013. The attack on the Kapotnya refinery was not an isolated incident; this facility has been targeted multiple times in recent days. The situation remains tense as drone strikes persist, and emergency services are working to maintain security.
These drone attacks on strategic Russian infrastructure highlight a growing aerial threat that could destabilize the country's internal situation. Given the critical role of fuel infrastructure in the economy, strikes on refineries could significantly impact fuel supplies in Moscow and other regions. The government and military are ramping up security measures, underscoring the severity of the threat.
The recent drone strikes on Moscow and its refineries have raised significant concerns about the security of critical infrastructure in Russia. In light of these developments, it's important to understand the broader implications of such attacks on oil facilities, particularly in the Rostov region.
