June 7 Marks the Feast Day of Saint Theodotus of Ancyra
Commemorating the Holy Hieromartyr Theodotus of Ancyra
According to Главком: On June 7, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the holy hieromartyr Theodotus of Ancyra. Living in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries, Theodotus ran a guesthouse in Ancyra-modern-day Ankara, the capital of Turkey. A secret Christian, his acts of faith repeatedly put him in grave danger during the persecution of believers under Emperor Diocletian.
Risking his own life, Theodotus sheltered Christians and secretly buried the bodies of those executed. When the local ruler ordered seven holy virgin martyrs drowned in a lake, Theodotus did not hesitate to retrieve their remains from the water and give them a proper burial. His noble deeds, however, did not go unpunished: he was ultimately beheaded for his faith.
Folk Traditions and Signs for June 7
June 7 is also tied to traditional weather lore. If the day is warm and sunny, a bountiful grain harvest is expected. A lack of morning dew on the grass may signal the onset of prolonged rain. Rain on this day suggests a poor rye harvest but promises a mushroom-rich autumn. Loud croaking from frogs in ponds indicates a period of warm, dry weather ahead. This date was considered favorable for planting late-season crops, an important marker in the agricultural calendar.
People historically avoided solitary walks to forests or open bodies of water on this day. Honoring Saint Theodotus, believers turn to him in prayer, asking for protection from evil, illness, and despair. One such prayer reads:
“O holy hieromartyr Theodotus, bearer of Christ’s passion and our warm intercessor! You gave your life for your faith and your neighbors, showing the world an example of great love and courage. We beg you: pray to the Merciful God for us sinners...”
The feast day of Saint Theodotus of Ancyra holds a significant place in the Orthodox calendar, inspiring the faithful to reflect on courage and self-sacrifice in the name of faith. By venerating the saint, believers not only remember his noble acts but also strive to emulate his example in daily life, turning to him for strength in difficult times. This day also highlights the close connection between religious traditions and the agricultural cycle, underscoring the role of nature in community life.
As the Orthodox community reflects on the legacy of Saint Theodotus, it is also important to remember other significant figures in the faith. For instance, just a few weeks prior, the Church commemorated the martyrdom of Hieromartyr Patricius, whose story similarly highlights the unwavering commitment to faith amidst persecution.
