Lydia's Rescue from Velykomykhailivka

According to Главком: An 81-year-old woman named Lydia has been evacuated from the village of Velykomykhailivka in the Dnipropetrovsk region. She had been living in her home for four months with the body of her deceased son, who was killed in a drone strike in November of last year. The evacuation was planned for over a month due to constant shelling, which made leaving the settlement extremely dangerous. The village is located only about one and a half kilometers from the front line, placing it under severe and direct threat.

Lydia was taken to a transit point in Voloske, where she received necessary aid. Olga Volkova, head of the social adaptation center, stated that psychologists had already worked with the woman and reported her condition as stable.

"Our task is to receive them, feed them, and get them settled. A psychiatrist has made their assessment: everything is in order," Volkova emphasized.

The Dire Conditions in Velykomykhailivka

The situation in the area is critical. Hospitals in Velykomykhailivka and the neighboring Pokrovske were bombed by Russian Federation forces, and all roads into the village are under fire. Albert Kolesnikov, who organized the evacuation, reported that

"even in an armored vehicle with electronic countermeasures, there is no guarantee you will get there and return alive."

He also noted that "the school is completely destroyed, the kindergarten is destroyed. There is debris everywhere, burned-out cars. Unexploded shells, parts of FPV drones." This illustrates the relentless and indiscriminate nature of the attacks faced by frontline communities.

Lydia has been registered as an internally displaced person and will be moved to a geriatric care home within a few months. The woman expressed her distress, stating, "I thought I would lose my mind. You live so peacefully, and then this happens." The tension in Velykomykhailivka remains high, with FPV drones reportedly entering the village every 15 minutes, causing further fear among the remaining residents.

This case highlights the profound human tragedies stemming from the conflict in Ukraine and the extreme vulnerabilities faced by the elderly during war. Lydia's evacuation is just one example of how the war devastates civilian lives, forcing people to abandon their homes and endure unimaginable loss under constant threat. Stories like this underscore the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region, where civilian infrastructure is systematically targeted.
