Drones Strike Afipsky Refinery in Krasnodar: Blasts Every Five Minutes
Drone Attack on the Afipsky Oil Refinery
According to Главком: A swarm of drones targeted the Afipsky oil refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region, triggering a fire and a series of explosions. The attack involved jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles, and local residents reported blasts occurring every five to seven minutes. The shockwave shattered windows in several homes across Krasnodar city, which lies roughly 18 kilometers from the facility.
This is not the first time the Afipsky refinery has come under fire in 2026. Its most recent previous incident occurred on the night of March 13–14, when drones damaged the AT-22/4 primary oil processing unit. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the plant has been hit at least 12 times. It now ranks among the three most frequently attacked refineries in Russia, alongside the Ilsky and Tuapse facilities.
Strategic Importance of the Afipsky Plant
Owned by the Safmar Group, the Afipsky refinery has a design capacity of 6.25 million tons of oil per year, though actual throughput-according to Reuters-reaches 7.2 million tons. That accounts for more than 2% of Russia’s total oil refining output. The facility produces gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel, all of which can be critical for supplying the occupation army, as noted by the Ukrainian General Staff.
The Krasnodar region, home to the Afipsky refinery, serves a dual military role. The Primorsko-Akhtarsk airfield hosts aircraft and stores Shahed drones, while the Yeysk airfield is used to base Su-34 bombers. Both sites have already been targeted by Ukrainian strikes, underscoring the strategic importance of this area in the ongoing conflict.
The situation surrounding the Afipsky refinery continues to highlight the critical role of oil processing infrastructure in military operations, as well as the growing threat level to such facilities amid the war. This attack could have major repercussions for fuel supplies needed for combat operations and the civilian sector alike. Moreover, the repeated strikes demonstrate the active efforts of Ukrainian forces to weaken the enemy’s logistical and material base.
The recent drone attack on the Afipsky refinery is part of a broader pattern of assaults targeting critical oil processing facilities in Russia. For instance, the Ilsky plant has also faced repeated strikes, highlighting the increasing focus on disrupting the country's energy infrastructure amid ongoing military operations. Understanding these incidents offers insight into the strategic dynamics of the conflict.
