The Czech Republic remains one of the main immigration destinations for Ukrainians. As of early 2026, over 570 thousand Ukrainian citizens live in the country, of which about 200 thousand already have resident status. Despite the lack of separate expedited programs for refugees, Czech Republic legislation provides a clear path to citizenship through naturalization or repatriation. This is written by Gromadyanstvo.

Obtaining a Czech passport opens access to residence and work without permits in EU countries and several European Economic Area states, visa-free travel to 174 countries worldwide, as well as free education and preferential mortgage.

Path to Czech citizenship: main stages

The standard term for obtaining citizenship for foreigners is 10 years and consists of several sequential steps:

  1. visa type D and temporary residence permit based on work, study, family reunification, or investment

  2. permanent residence after five years of legal stay

  3. application for citizenship after five years of holding a permanent residency

Candidates must be of legal age, have no criminal convictions or tax debts, possess Czech language proficiency at the B1 level, and have knowledge of the basics of history and the Constitution.

The procedure is accompanied by mandatory administrative fees, which in the Czech Republic are paid with special stamps. The main expenses are as follows:

  1. issuing visa D - about 20 euros

  2. temporary residence permit - 100 euros

  3. permanent residence - from 40 to 100 euros depending on age

  4. language exam - 150 euros, test on Czech realities - 80 euros

  5. application for citizenship - 12-20 euros

  6. passport production - from 4 to 24 euros

There is a separate simplified procedure for former citizens of the USSR and their descendants. In this case, examinations and residence criteria do not apply, and the application review lasts up to 60 days with a fee of 98 euros.

Czech legislation allows dual citizenship, so Ukrainians can retain their passport. At the same time, they will be regarded solely as citizens of this state on the territory of the Czech Republic.

It should be noted that one of the key documents for legal employment in the Czech Republic is the Employee Card, which can be obtained based on an official contract with a local employer.
