A road trip through Europe can lead to unexpected fines even for experienced drivers. Many countries have lesser-known traffic rules, violations of which can cost hundreds or even thousands of euros. This is reported by Visit Ukraine.

Unusual Traffic Rules in Europe That Drivers Don't Know

Different countries in Europe have their own norms that can surprise tourists behind the wheel.

Among the most unusual rules:

  1. In Germany, it is prohibited to stop on the autobahn due to lack of fuel.
  2. In France, it's not allowed to use navigation systems with radar display functions.
  3. In Portugal, there is a ban on transporting spare fuel cans.
  4. In Finland, drivers are required to drive with headlights on even during the day.
  5. In Spain, drivers can be fined for driving in flip-flops or barefoot.

Experts recommend carefully checking local rules before a trip, as actions familiar to Ukrainian drivers abroad may turn out to be violations.

Where Fines Can Reach Thousands of Euros

One of the most expensive violations recorded in Portugal can lead to a fine of up to 15 thousand euros for transporting a fuel can in a vehicle.

In France, the use of a navigator that shows the exact location of speed cameras can result in a fine of up to 1500 euros.

In Spain, improper footwear while driving can cost a driver up to 200 euros.

Why It's Important to Check Local Rules Before Traveling

In Germany, even an empty tank on the autobahn is considered a violation, as the driver should have planned their route and refueling in advance. Such a stop can incur a fine of 30 to 70 euros.

In Finland, special attention is paid to road safety, thus low beam headlights or daytime running lights must be on regardless of the time of day or weather conditions.

Experts emphasize that ignorance of local laws does not exempt one from responsibility. Therefore, before a road trip through Europe, it is advisable to familiarize oneself with the requirements of the country being visited.
